Your customers search inside Instagram and YouTube, look for businesses near them, and increasingly ask ChatGPT or Gemini who to choose. Social media SEO, GEO and AEO is how one set of social profiles and posts gets found in all three.
Social media SEO, GEO and AEO is the practice of optimising your brand's social profiles and content so they are found in three places: in platform and Google search (SEO), in local and location-based results (GEO), and inside the answers AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini give (AEO). In short: SEO gets your posts found, GEO gets them found nearby, and AEO gets your brand named by AI.
The three terms come from website marketing, but each has a direct social media equivalent.
| Social media SEO | Social media GEO | Social media AEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Be found when people search | Be found by people nearby | Be named in AI answers |
| Where | Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest search; Google results | Location tags, Maps, Google Business Profile, geo-targeted ads | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews |
| Wins with | Keywords in profiles, captions, titles, alt text and on-screen text | Consistent address, city keywords, local tags, regional language | Consistent entity facts, Q&A content, reviews, third-party mentions |
| Measured by | Search impressions, profile visits, saves | Local reach, direction requests, store visits, calls | Citation frequency and share of AI answers |
A note on vocabulary. “GEO” has two meanings in 2026. In social media it usually means geo-targeting, reaching people in a place. In AI search it also means generative engine optimisation, which overlaps heavily with AEO. This guide uses GEO in the local sense and AEO for AI answers. For the full breakdown, see GEO vs AEO vs SEO.
Your social profiles are no longer just where people follow you. They are one of the main sources search engines and AI models use to decide who you are.
Specialty cold brew in Andheri West. Open 8am–11pm. Order on Swiggy or visit us near Lokhandwala.
Start with the profile: it is the fact sheet search engines and AI read first.
Eight moves, in the order we run them for clients.
Use your real business name, a keyword-led bio (“Specialty coffee in Andheri West, Mumbai”), your category, website, phone and address. Keep these identical on every platform and on Google Business Profile.
Put the words customers type into the first line of the caption, the on-screen text and the spoken audio. Platforms read all three. Add descriptive alt text to images. Instagram's AI reads your visuals and caption to describe the post for search, so make the product, place and purpose obvious in both, rather than leaving the AI to guess. Use a few specific hashtags, not thirty generic ones.
Title videos as the question they answer, add chapters, write a full description and pin a comment with key facts. YouTube results also surface in Google and are frequently cited by AI assistants.
Tag locations on posts and reels, mention neighbourhoods and cities in captions, and post regularly on Google Business Profile. For multiple outlets, keep a profile or highlight per location with consistent details.
Research keywords in Hindi, Marathi, Tamil and other regional languages your buyers use, including Hinglish. Regional-language search on social is growing and far less competitive than English.
Turn real customer questions into reels, carousels and FAQ highlights with a direct answer in the first few seconds. This format suits voice search and is easy for AI models to quote.
Encourage customers and creators to tag you, review you on Google and mention you by name. Third-party mentions corroborate what you say about yourself, which is what AI engines look for. See our guide to UGC and nano-influencers.
Use location-targeted ads on Meta and YouTube to push your best organic posts to people within a set radius of your stores or service area. Paid reach builds engagement and reviews, which strengthens organic and AI visibility.
Geo strategy decides where you show up: the city, neighbourhood or radius your content reaches. AEO decides whether an AI names you when someone asks for a recommendation. Geo work is mostly tags, local keywords and targeting. AEO work is mostly consistency and proof: the same facts about your brand everywhere, questions answered clearly, and other people confirming them. They meet in local queries such as “best dentist near me”, where an AI assistant combines location with trust signals.

They meet in “near me” questions, where AI combines location with trust.
Short video is where most social search now happens for Indian consumers. Reach depends less on follower count and more on whether the platform understands what your video is about and who it is for.
Voice queries are longer and phrased as full questions: “where can I get my AC serviced near Powai today?” The content that wins them also wins Google's featured snippets and AI answers. Use the question as the title or first line, answer it in one or two plain sentences, then add detail. Keep opening hours, service areas and prices current on every profile, because voice assistants read them back directly.
Say the keyword, show it on screen, and answer the full question in one line.
Platforms read your on-screen text and transcribe your audio. Both count as search signals.
Multi-location brands win or lose on consistency. Each store needs to look like a distinct, verified place to search engines and AI.
A Google Business Profile for every store, with its own address, phone, hours and photos, linked from a matching location page on your website.
List each location on the directories that matter in that metro, such as Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Zomato or Practo depending on category, with details identical to the Google listing. Directory consistency is one of the strongest signals for local rankings and for AI recommendations.
A brand can rank first in Pune and nowhere in Bengaluru. Track local search position and AI answer share separately for each city you serve.
Geo-fenced ads on Meta and Google reach people within a set radius of each store, or near competitor outlets, during the hours they are most likely to visit.
A geo-targeted contest, for example “post your order and tag our Koregaon Park store”, generates location-tagged user-generated content, reviews and local awareness at the same time.
One mismatched phone number is enough to weaken a location.
Track every city separately, and keep every listing identical.
No single tool covers social search, local and AI answers end to end, so most brands combine two or three. Look for these features:
AI-driven tools save time on keyword clustering, caption drafts, review replies and reporting, and spot local trends sooner. Most offer free trials of 7 to 14 days. Use the trial on your own accounts and one real city before committing to an annual plan.
A freelancer suits a single-location business that needs content and profile management on one or two platforms. An in-house hire suits brands with steady volume and the budget for tools. An agency makes sense when you need social, local listings, ads and AI visibility working together across several cities, with one set of reports. For cost ranges, see our guide to SEO, GEO and AEO agency pricing in Mumbai.
Whoever you consider, ask for these:
Ask for one report that covers all three. Illustrative only.
Write down what you want more of, such as calls, store visits, bookings or online orders, and the cities or areas that matter.
Check their own social profiles and listings first. A team that cannot make itself visible will struggle to do it for you.
Ask each to review your current profiles, local listings and AI answer presence, and to show you the three biggest gaps.
Agree on measurable targets per city and a monthly report before signing a longer contract.
Tools help with scheduling, listening and tracking, but none of them write consistent, quotable content for you. That part is strategy and craft. See how we approach social media management and SEO, GEO and AEO.
It is the practice of optimising your brand's social profiles and content so they are found in three places: in platform and Google search (SEO), in local and location-based results (GEO), and inside the answers AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini give (AEO).
Social signals are not a direct ranking factor for your website, but public social content is indexed and shown in Google results, YouTube videos rank in Google, and active profiles strengthen the brand entity that Google and AI engines use to understand who you are.
Geo strategy makes your content visible to people in a specific place, through location tags, local keywords, city pages and geo-targeted ads. AEO makes your brand quotable by AI assistants, through consistent profile facts, question-and-answer content and corroboration across reviews and directories. Geo decides where you show up; AEO decides whether an AI names you.
Yes. Since July 2025, public posts from Instagram professional accounts can be indexed by Google and other search engines. Instagram also uses AI to describe images and generate titles for posts in search results, so clear visuals, keyword-led captions and alt text make your content easier to find in the app and on Google.
For most Indian brands: YouTube, Instagram and short-video reels, Google Business Profile posts, LinkedIn for B2B, and Pinterest for fashion, home and food. Choose by where your buyers search, not where your competitors post.
Profile and keyword fixes can lift in-platform search visibility within weeks. Local visibility usually builds over one to three months. AI citations typically take three to six months of consistent publishing and entity clean-up.
Yes. The foundations, complete profiles, consistent business details, keyword-led captions, location tags and answering customer questions publicly, need discipline more than budget. An agency helps with scale, measurement across AI platforms and regional-language content.
Directories such as Justdial, Sulekha and IndiaMART act as citations that confirm your business name, address and phone number. When these match your Google Business Profile and social profiles exactly, local rankings and AI recommendations improve. Mismatched details across directories are one of the most common reasons a business fails to appear.
