Every agency in Mumbai now calls itself a performance marketing agency. This is a straight comparison of who actually is one, what each is built for, what retainers cost, and the questions that separate a partner from a vendor.
Mumbai's performance marketing market splits into three groups. Network media agencies such as Interactive Avenues, Performics and iProspect suit large brands with multi-crore media budgets. Independent full-service agencies such as Schbang and WATConsult suit brands buying creative and media together. Performance specialists such as NPR Design and Kinnect suit brands that want spend run against a cost per acquisition target with senior people on the account. Retainers across the market run from about Rs 40,000 to Rs 8,00,000 a month depending on scope, with media spend billed separately; NPR Design's own range is Rs 40,000 to Rs 3,00,000.
A performance marketing agency is accountable for a commercial number, not a deliverable. That number is usually cost per acquisition, return on ad spend, or qualified lead volume, and it is agreed before the first campaign goes live. A digital marketing agency is accountable for output instead: campaigns launched, creatives delivered, posts published, a monthly report sent.
The distinction matters in a pitch, because it is testable. Ask which single number the agency is accepting accountability for, and what happens if it is missed for two consecutive months. An agency that cannot answer in one sentence is selling digital marketing with a performance label on the deck. We wrote a longer version of this test in how to choose a performance marketing agency in Mumbai.
Below is the current field, grouped by what each is built for rather than by size. Judge on fit: a network media desk and a lean specialist solve genuinely different problems, and the wrong match is the most common reason a performance engagement fails inside six months.
| Agency | Group | Core strength | Best suited to | Typical retainer / month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Interactive Avenues | Network media | Large-scale media planning and buying | Enterprise brands with multi-crore annual budgets | Rs 5,00,000+ |
| Performics India | Network media | Search and programmatic at scale | Brands needing global process and audit trails | Rs 5,00,000+ |
| iProspect India | Network media | Integrated media across search, social, video | Multi-market brands with in-house marketing teams | Rs 5,00,000+ |
| Schbang | Independent full-service | Creative firepower with an in-house media team | Consumer brands wanting brand plus performance | Rs 2,50,000 – 6,00,000 |
| WATConsult | Independent full-service | Social-led campaigns with paid amplification | Brands leading with social and content | Rs 2,00,000 – 5,00,000 |
| Tonic Worldwide | Independent full-service | Digital brand campaigns and content | Brands building awareness alongside conversion | Rs 1,50,000 – 4,00,000 |
| Kinnect | Performance specialist | Paid social and creative testing volume | D2C and app brands scaling paid social | Rs 1,50,000 – 4,00,000 |
| Social Beat | Performance specialist | Regional-language performance at scale | Brands targeting non-metro and vernacular audiences | Rs 1,50,000 – 4,00,000 |
| Matrix Bricks | SME full-service | SEO, PPC and social under one roof | SMEs wanting a single all-in-one partner | Rs 50,000 – 1,50,000 |
| NPR Design | Performance + search specialist | Paid media, SEO and AEO measured on CPA and revenue | D2C, B2B and services brands from Rs 1L media spend up | Rs 40,000 – 3,00,000 by scope |
The three network agencies are grouped together deliberately. They are excellent at what they are built for, planning and buying large budgets with process and governance, and a poor fit for a brand spending under roughly Rs 5 lakh a month in media, where the account will sit with a junior team.
Retainers in Mumbai run from about Rs 40,000 to Rs 8,00,000 a month, and the range is explained almost entirely by scope: how many channels, how much creative production, and whether analytics and landing-page work are inside the fee. Media spend sits outside the retainer in every legitimate arrangement, and the invoice should separate the two clearly.
| Scope | Monthly retainer | What it usually covers |
|---|---|---|
| Single channel, small budget | Rs 40,000 – 1,00,000 | One platform run properly, tracking, monthly reporting. Suits media spend up to about Rs 2L. |
| Two to three channels | Rs 1,00,000 – 2,50,000 | Paid search plus paid social, conversion tracking, creative iteration, fortnightly reviews. |
| Full performance programme | Rs 2,50,000 – 5,00,000 | Multi-channel media, creative production, CRO, server-side measurement, dedicated pod. |
| Multi-brand or multi-market | Rs 5,00,000 – 8,00,000 | Several brands or geographies, marketplace and app channels, analytics engineering, senior strategy time. |
Two pricing rules worth holding. First, be wary of pure percentage-of-spend pricing at low budgets: it pays the agency to increase spend rather than efficiency. Second, a fee below roughly Rs 40,000 a month cannot buy senior attention on more than one channel, whatever the proposal says. For the wider market picture see how much digital marketing costs in India.
Awards and client-logo walls are weak signals. These six criteria separate a partner from a vendor. Use them as a scorecard while you take calls.
The agency should name the metric it is accountable for, the target, and the review cadence, before you sign. Vagueness here predicts every later problem.
A percentage growth figure with no base and no timeframe is decoration. Ask for the category, the monthly spend, the period and the downstream conversion rate.
Server-side tracking, a documented event schema and CRM-to-ad-platform reconciliation come before budget increases. An agency that scales spend on a pixel pasted into a theme is guessing.
Ask to meet the person who will be in the ad account daily, and how many other accounts they hold. Pitch teams and delivery teams are frequently different people.
On paid social, creative is the targeting. Ask how many new concepts ship per month and who produces them, because a media plan without creative supply plateaus in six weeks.
You should own the ad accounts, pixels, creative files and data, with a documented handover inside a stated number of days if you leave.
NPR Design, also known as The Creative Madhatters, is an Andheri West performance and search agency operating since 2008. We suit D2C, B2B and services brands that want paid media, SEO and AEO run as one pipeline and measured on cost per acquisition and revenue. Retainers run from Rs 40,000 to Rs 3,00,000 a month depending on scope, media spend is always billed separately, and the person who pitches is the person who runs the account.
We are not the right fit for everyone. If you need a media desk to place a multi-crore annual budget with network-grade governance, a network agency will serve you better. If you want spend scaled before the measurement layer is fixed, we will decline. Here are our own accounts with the numbers and periods attached, judged by the same bar we ask you to apply to everyone else.
Two more worth reading if your situation matches. Impetus is the closest analogue for high-volume financial-services lead generation, and Lumina for long-cycle B2B where the buying committee is small and the deal size is not.
The best agency is not the most famous one. It is the one whose strength matches the problem you actually have.
There is no single best agency. Network media agencies such as Interactive Avenues, Performics and iProspect suit large brands with multi-crore media budgets. Independent full-service agencies such as Schbang and WATConsult suit brands that want creative and media together. Performance specialists such as NPR Design and Kinnect suit brands that want spend run against a cost per acquisition target with senior people on the account.
Monthly retainers run from about Rs 40,000 for a single-channel scope on a small budget to about Rs 8,00,000 for a multi-channel programme across paid search, paid social, creative production and analytics. Media spend sits outside the retainer. Most mid-sized Mumbai advertisers land between Rs 1,00,000 and Rs 3,00,000 a month.
A digital marketing agency is accountable for output: campaigns launched, creatives delivered, posts published. A performance marketing agency is accountable for a commercial number, usually cost per acquisition, return on ad spend or qualified lead volume. If an agency cannot state which number it accepts accountability for, it is a digital marketing agency.
Independent and specialist shops take on startups and small businesses; network agencies generally do not, because their cost base requires large media budgets. Below roughly Rs 2,00,000 a month in media spend, look for a specialist that will run a single channel properly rather than a full-service agency spreading a small budget across four.
Most offer a free discovery call, and many will review your ad account before quoting. NPR Design offers a free 30-minute consultation and a benchmark read on your current cost per acquisition, requested here. A full paid audit covering tracking, account structure, creative and landing pages is a separate engagement.
Certification is common and easy to verify: ask for the agency's Google Partner status and the individual Google Ads and Meta Blueprint certifications of the people who will actually run your account, not the agency badge alone. Certification proves familiarity with the platform, not competence at scaling profitably.
Tracking and account restructuring take two to four weeks. Campaigns typically reach steady state between 30 and 90 days depending on category and purchase cycle. Judge an agency on quarters and review monthly. Any agency guaranteeing a ROAS figure before seeing your data is guessing.
Most operate city-wide and work remotely with clients across Andheri, Bandra, BKC, Lower Parel, Powai, Navi Mumbai and Thane, as well as Pune. NPR Design is based at Makskap Centre, Andheri West, and works with clients across India and in the UK and GCC markets.
