How to start a career in performance marketing: beginner skills, certifications and jobs

NPR Design26 Sep 20265 min read

Performance marketing is one of the more open routes into marketing: there is no required degree, and what you can demonstrate counts for more than where you studied. This guide covers the skills, roadmap and career paths for beginners.

Short answer

To start a career in performance marketing, learn business maths and KPIs, then one search platform (Google Ads) and one social platform (Meta Ads), then tracking with GA4 and GTM. Add LinkedIn Ads and ABM if you want B2B roles, and learn to use AI for content generation within a content strategy. Run a small campaign on a real account, earn free platform certifications, and document what you did. No specific degree is required. Common first roles are performance marketing executive, PPC executive, paid social executive and digital marketing analyst, in agencies, in-house teams or D2C brands.

This guide is part of our series on how to choose a performance marketing course in India. It answers one question in depth; the overview covers the full checklist.

Who is eligible to start a career in performance marketing?

Anyone comfortable with numbers, spreadsheets and digital tools. Graduates from commerce, engineering, management and arts backgrounds all enter the field, as do people switching from sales, content, design or customer support. Employers mainly check whether you can read data and explain decisions.

What skills do beginners need?

Business mathsEvery decision comes back to CPA, ROAS and marginA KPI sheet with break-even ROAS worked out
Google AdsCaptures existing demand through searchA Search campaign structure with keywords and negatives

Written communicationClients and managers read your reportsA one-page weekly report

What is a realistic learning roadmap?

  1. Month 1: funnel basics, KPIs and business maths; free Google Skillshop and Meta Blueprint courses.
  2. Month 2: GA4 and GTM on a test website; build a Search campaign, a Meta campaign and a LinkedIn campaign; practise AI-assisted ad copy.
  3. Month 3: run a small real campaign, track it end to end and write up what you learned.
  4. Month 4 onwards: structured training with feedback, a portfolio and interview preparation.

A structured course compresses these stages and adds review. Our syllabus guide sets out what that training should cover, and the course selection guide helps you pick one.

Certificates, diplomas or platform certifications: which matter?

CredentialIssued byWhat it signals
Platform certificationGoogle, Meta, LinkedInYou know the platform’s features and terminology
Course certificateTraining providerYou completed a programme; value depends on the provider
DiplomaUniversity or instituteFormal study, often broader and more theoretical
Portfolio and live resultsYouYou can do the work; weighed most heavily in interviews

Platform certifications are worth having because they are free or low cost and widely recognised. None of these replaces evidence of work you have done.

From our agency

When we hire juniors at NPR Design, the traits that predict success are curiosity about why a number moved and the ability to write it down clearly. Platform knowledge can be taught in weeks. A candidate who has run a ₹3,000 campaign, made mistakes and can explain them usually progresses faster than one with five certificates and no live experience.

Are you ready for advanced training?

You are ready for a structured course with live campaigns if you can tick most of these:

  • You can explain CPA, ROAS and conversion rate in your own words
  • You have completed at least one free Google or Meta course
  • You know what GA4 and GTM are for, even if you have not set them up
  • You can commit 8 to 10 hours a week for three months
  • You have a small budget for live campaign ad spend

When you compare courses, keep two questions separate: this guide covers the career path, and our placement assistance guide covers how to evaluate a provider’s job support.

Is the NPR course suitable for beginners?

Yes. The NPR Performance Marketing Accelerator requires no prior performance marketing experience; Module 01 covers fundamentals and business maths before platform work begins. Week 13 prepares learners for the Google Ads, Meta Blueprint and LinkedIn Marketing certifications, which are issued by the platforms. The syllabus includes LinkedIn Ads and signal-based ABM, AI content generation and content strategy, agentic AI, and CRM and marketing automation, alongside Google Ads, Meta Ads, analytics and SEO, GEO and AEO. It suits beginners, working professionals, freelancers and founders.
